International Document Authentication: Apostille vs Embassy Legalization
When using U.S. documents internationally, you need authentication. The method depends on your destination country.
What's the Difference?
An apostille is used for countries in the Hague Convention (over 120 countries). It's a single certificate that authenticates your document. Embassy legalization is for non-Hague countries and requires multiple steps of authentication. Note: Thailand joins the Apostille Convention effective February 28, 2027; embassy legalization is required for Thailand-bound documents until then.
Which Do You Need?
Check if your destination country is part of the Hague Convention. If yes, use apostille. If no, you'll need embassy legalization, which involves state authentication, U.S. Department of State authentication, and finally embassy authentication.
