Legalization currently required; Apostille Convention effective February 28, 2027

    Thailand Document Legalization

Thailand requires particular care during its treaty transition. As reviewed on October 13, 2026, the Apostille Convention is scheduled to enter into force for Thailand on February 28, 2027. Do not treat accession as an operational apostille route today.

U.S. documents for use in Thailand

For state-issued U.S. documents, the Royal Thai Embassy publishes a legalization chain: state authentication, U.S. Department of State authentication, then Thai mission authentication. Its instructions require the federal authentication seal and reject apostilles. Confirm the appropriate mission’s jurisdiction before sending documents; the Washington embassy does not cover every state.

For its covered jurisdictions, the Washington embassy requests an application, authenticated documents, copies of every authenticated page, and owner or preparer identification. Use the mission’s current instructions for the complete packet.

Federal-issued records follow the federal authentication route. Confirm the document and mission requirements before submission.

    Documents issued in Thailand

A Thai-issued record follows the Thai issuing-authority route. The Washington embassy’s certified-copy service is restricted primarily to documents it issued; other government records require individual assessment. A U.S. apostille does not authenticate the Thai issuing official.

    Translation and deadlines

Ask the Thai receiving office for its translation, document-format, and validity requirements before ordering translation or sending originals. Federal turnaround is confirmed after document review; embassy processing and shipping are additional.
